In ‘heart breaks open’, Jesus’ internal process is represented through his poetry which is inspired by the works of June Jordan, Alice Walker and Audre Lorde.
The film opens with this quote from Audre Lorde: “Poetry is the way we help give name to the nameless so it can be thought. The farthest external horizons of our hopes and fears are cobbled by our poems, carved from the rock experiences of our daily lives.” It is part of her essay “Poetry is Not a Luxury” from the book Power, Oppression and the Politics of Culture: a lesbian/feminist perspective. (New York: Out and Out press. 1978).
The opening and closing poems in the film — To The Ultimate and If You Want To Know God — were written by billie rain. Get these poems and more in her book Fix This Mess: Selections 1993 – 2010.
